Lengthy isolated from the rest of Greece, the Mani peninsula is residence to a clannish community that promises warrior heritage.

“Here is your lalaggi,” explained Giorgos Oikonomeas, handing me a crispy dough strip deep fried in further-virgin olive oil. He experienced the construct of a warrior – strong and wide-shouldered – but his wrinkled face was heat and peaceful.
Oikonomeas grew up in the village of Neochori on the Mani Peninsula’s north-west coastline and in no way still left.
